Children Around Ireland Encouraged To Get Writing

EBS and INTO launch 2012 National Handwriting Competition

EBS and INTO celebrate 20th anniversary of competition

Thursday 19th January 2012 - EBS in conjunction with the Irish National Teachers' Organisation (INTO) today launched the 2012 EBS/INTO National Handwriting Competition and their annual campaign to highlight the importance of having good handwriting. This year the competition is celebrating its 20th year which is open to all national schools throughout the country. Children can enter through their local primary schools.

The competition traditionally attracts entries from over 100,000 children all over Ireland each year. This year entrants are being asked to write a piece of prose or a poem about their own family or copy a piece connected to family in some way. Students are not being judged on content but the style, flair, neatness and layout of their handwriting.

Speaking at the launch, Noreen Flynn, President of the INTO said: "We are delighted to announce the launch of the 2012 INTO/EBS Handwriting competition. The competition has been a huge success over the last number of years and it's great to be celebrating the 20th year of the competition this year. Our aim is to celebrate the skill of handwriting among all children from infants to 6th class. As always style, flair, neatness and layout of handwriting are the criteria that judges use to assess the entries. I would like to thank EBS for their continued support of the competition."

Aidan Power, Head of Marketing and Communications, EBS said: "EBS has a long association with education and has been partnering with the INTO for the past twenty years to ensure the skill of handwriting is kept alive among the youth of Ireland. We're delighted to be celebrating the 20th anniversary of the competition and I'm looking forward to seeing all the entries coming through once again this year. Each year I'm amazed at the number of entries we receive nationwide and I hope this year will be no different. I wish everyone the best of luck with their entries – get writing!"

Entries are received in categories ranging from infants to 6th Class, with a Special Education prize also being awarded. The closing date for entries to the 2012 EBS/INTO National Handwriting Competition is Friday 24th February.
