Our heritage and ethos
EBS has a distinct heritage which is at the core of everything we do. While many of our competitors strive to be different, in our case it's already a fact of life. The reason lies in our heritage, our ethos, our culture and our mutual structure.
We were born out of a co-operative mutual philosophy and founded on the principles of members' mutual trust for each other. That was true then and it's still true today.
This principle is embedded in our way of doing business and makes us stand out from the general run of financial services providers.
In 1935, Alec McCabe and the teachers who founded us had a vision to make access to housing finance available to everyone.
In order to do this they set up a Permanent Mutual Building Society. The financial strength of collective membership was used to give individuals, who previously could not get a mortgage, the means to buy their own homes.
Today, the principle of customers' mutual support for each other, is still the critical component in our DNA.
