Shopping Online is Changing

We’re making shopping online even more secure

In 2021 we’re adding an extra layer of security known as Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) when you use your EBS debit card online.  These changes will help fight fraud and make your online transactions even more secure.

When you’re shopping online, you’ll have to confirm that it is you using your card. You will be able to do this with the EBS CardManager app, using a push notification from the app. If you are a registered user of Your Accounts Online you can continue to access your EBS accounts using the existing EBS Authenticator app. However, when this change comes in to effect, to continue to shop online you will need to download the EBS CardManager app.

What do I need to do?

To get set up for SCA you will need to:

  1. Download the EBS CardManager App.
This is available on the App Store on your Apple device or the Play Store on your Android device.

  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to get set up and enrol your device.
  3. Make sure notifications for the CardManager app are turned on.
This way you won’t miss a notification to authenticate your online card transactions when shopping online. You can do this when you are setting the app up on your device.

We’re also asking you to make sure we have the right mobile number for you. If we don’t you can update it by calling us on 1850 65 43 21 (+353 1 665 800 if calling from abroad) and selecting option 2. Opening hours are Monday to Friday 9:00 to 17:00 (excluding Bank Holidays).

How does SCA work?

SCA uses two factor authentication.  This is a secure, digital way to confirm it’s you using the card online. It asks you for two of the following pieces of information that you set up in advance:

Something you know (for example personal access code (PAC), password)
Something you have (for example a phone / app, code)
Something you are (for example fingerprint, face recognition)

Using the EBS CardManager app to complete SCA in this way is the best way to make shopping online even more secure and reduce fraud.

In some cases, where websites are not yet set up for SCA, we will have to decline online purchases over a certain amount. You may not be able to shop online on certain websites if they are not yet ready for SCA. More details can be found on the Banking and Payments Federation Ireland (BPFI) website: www.mypsd2.ie.

If you do not have a smartphone you can use a smart device such as a tablet. However, you will also need a mobile phone to receive a one-time passcode when setting this app up. If you do not have a device or tablet you will not be able to complete SCA for your EBS Debit Card.

I live abroad, do I still have to do this?

Yes. To ensure you can continue to use your cards for transactions in the EEA you will need to be set up for SCA.

If you get a new smartphone or want to use a different device then all you need to do is download the app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store and follow the steps to enrol the new device.

If you change your mobile phone number please let us know so that we can send the one-time passcode to the correct number.

I haven’t received the push notification to ask me to confirm the transaction – what do I do?

Don’t worry, if you aren’t receiving the notifications you can still approve the transaction. Just open the CardManager app on your device, enter your personal code and you will be able to see the transaction details.

Make sure your push notifications are turned on. If they are turned on you may not have received the notification due to a network issue.
