In 2021 we’re adding an extra layer of security known as Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) when you use your EBS debit card online. These changes will help fight fraud and make your online transactions more secure.
When you’re shopping online, you’ll have to confirm that it is you using your card. If you are a registered user of EBS Your Accounts Online then the confirmation is similar to what we ask of you when you use this system.
You will be able to do this with an app that’s on its way. We will write to you when it is ready to download and show how it works.
In the meantime, to get ready for SCA, we’re asking you to make sure we have the right mobile number for you. You can do this by calling us on 1850 65 43 21 (+353 1 665 800 if calling from abroad) and selecting option 2. Opening hours are Monday – Friday 9:00 to 17:00.

What is SCA?
SCA stands for Strong Customer Authentication and is sometimes referred to as ‘Two Factor Authentication’. Under legislation, financial institutions must authenticate online card transactions using two out of three factors:
1. Something you know
2. Something you have
3. Something you are
At EBS, we will do this with an app we are getting ready, similar to how our customers use SCA to log into EBS Your Accounts Online.
Do I have to use SCA when shopping online with my card?
Yes, when shopping online with your EBS Debit Card you will need to use SCA to authenticate the transaction.

What do I need to do to get ready for SCA?

When do I need to set up SCA by?
Since 14 September 2019, SCA has been in use in our online banking services. Over the coming months, it will also be required for online shopping. We will write to you about this.
Why do you need my mobile phone number?
Your mobile number is unique and we will use it to set you up for SCA. We will text you a code to authenticate your phone. Having your mobile number along with the mobile app will be the smoothest way to authenticate card transactions when shopping online.

What if I don’t use a mobile phone?
From early on in 2021, we will need to confirm it is you using your card online with SCA using a smartphone and an app, which is on its way.
I live abroad, do I still have to do this?
Yes. To ensure you can continue to use your cards for transactions in the EEA you will need to be set up for SCA.
